For the Last Time – Live from the Astrodome – George StraitView More By George Strait Our ReviewThe “last time” in the title of George Strait’s first live album doesn’t mean that this is his final concert. Rather, it documents the last time the Astrodome hosted the long-running Houston Livestock Show, which had been a mecca for country music performers since Gene Autry first appeared there in 1942. That Strait was the last performer at such a hallowed event speaks to his stature in both Texas and the country music world at large. For the country music nation no one better symbolizes the essence of its music and its values. The concert runs through a selection of Strait’s innumerable hits, songs that even casual Strait fans can sing word-for-word, and the 50-year-old Strait, invigorated by the momentousness of the occasion, sings them like he was 20. Part of that vitality comes from his lifelong touring group, The Ace In the Hole Band. Of the dozens of albums Strait has released, only For the Last Time features them on every song and that reason alone makes it essential listening.. Customer ReviewsFantastic Album (4 stars)This album isn't perfect, but "I Can Still Make Cheyenne", "Run", and "Blue Clear Sky" make this album more than worth it. And "Amarillo by Morning" is the best recording of the best rodeo song ever written. Imagine, there was a time when country singers still sang about rodeos! great way to remember... (5 stars) that concert was the ending of a fantastic tradition and he closed the astrodome down like a champ. this album is a great way to remember dome dogs, dome foam and the longest rodeo tradition in the world. Wow (5 stars) One of his best concerts ever. "Amarillo by Morning" is by far the best song on this CD, a must buy. An all out good CD, "George well done sir." Drawing from both the honky tonk and Western swing traditions, Strait didn't refashion the genres; instead, he revitalized them for a new decade.
