Fairytale – DonovanView More By Donovan Our ReviewDonovan’s second album is where the Scottish folksinger comes into his own. The writing is ambitious and exciting, sparked by a troubadour tradition best expressed in the autobiographical “To Try for the Sun,” where Donovan’s positive vibes first manifest. There is a timeless sunshine to tracks such as “Summer Day Reflection Song,” “Circus of Sour,” “Colours” and “Little Tin Soldier.” The additional instrumentation on “Sunny Goodge Street” intimates the psychedelic pop that Donovan would soon pursue. “Little Tin Soldier” features one of Donovan’s finest vocal performances. The bonus material makes for a complete portrait, featuring his cover of Buffy Sainte-Marie’s “Universal Soldier” and the blues-based “Hey Gyp (Dig the Slowness)” that was later covered to great effect by the Animals. “The War Drags On” focuses on the Vietnam War. “Do You Hear Me Now” is essential Donovan, with his voice raising in desperation. Though Donovan was never in Dylan’s league, he managed to carve out his own brilliant persona. These are among the most powerful recordings of the ‘60s.. Customer Reviewshe truly is..... Where the thrust of Dylan's music remains its bleak introspection and bitter realism, Donovan fully embraced the wide-eyed optimism of the flower power movement, his ethereal, ornate songs radiating a mystical beauty and childlike wonder; for better or worse, his recordings remain quintessential...
