Faces – Earth, Wind & FireView More By Earth, Wind & Fire Our ReviewIn a 2007 interview Maurice White called Faces his favorite Earth, Wind & Fire album, “because we were really in tune, playing together and it gave us the opportunity to explore new areas. We were really being a self-contained band.” It’s easy to hear that sense of integration and self-assurance in Faces. In many ways their first album of the ‘80s encapsulates everything the band learned and accomplished over the course of the ‘70s. During that period, White and his ever-evolving group of musicians mastered several different styles: sweet soul, funk, disco, jazz, samba, African. However, Earth, Wind & Fire’s greatest talent was not necessarily versatility, but rather fusion, and Faces is the ultimate proof of their ability to incorporate a number of musical ideas into a refined package. Even though Faces birthed three hit singles (“Let Me Talk,” “You,” “And Love Goes On”) the album, perhaps more than anything other by EW&F, isn’t built on the strength of a few great songs. Instead it feels like a single unified experience, delivered with perfect pitch and effortless continuity.. Customer Reviewshope and world vision (5 stars)Man, I remember the day I bought the album and ran home to play this. I remember back in those days when it was still possible to hear groups that had a real social and societal transformation vision that was uplifting. This album was full of good message, positivity and hope. It seemed to reflect the world view that this group had absorbed in its travels and embracing of many cultures. It was HOT!! I always looked forward to reading the de Maybe Their Best (5 stars) You, Sailaway, Sparkle, You Went Away, and others, plus the smash hit And Love Goes On might have made this their best album, but I think making it a 2-Record Set was a mistake and might have turned some off. Of all their cds, this is the one that is least overplayed. Play it again and again. And the hits just kept on coming.... (5 stars) This was a truly uplifting set of songs. The songs in this album are still wonderful, and the lyrics apply today. This is a true musical wonder, and should be played more and more to our children. Great work and imagination in this album! Thanks guys! Conceived by drummer, bandleader, songwriter, kalimba player, and occasional vocalist Maurice White, EWF's all-encompassing musical vision used funk as its foundation, but also incorporated jazz, smooth soul, gospel, pop, rock & roll, psychedelia, blues, folk, African music, and, later on, disco. Lead singer Philip Bailey gave EWF an extra dimension with his...
