Echo – Tom Petty & The HeartbreakersView More By Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers Our ReviewAfter collaborating on a variety of instrumentals and covers for the 1996 soundtrack to She’s the One, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers officially reunited with 1999’s Echo. The playing is more steady and grounded than it was in the 80s, and Rick Rubin (who produced Petty’s hit 1994 solo album Wildflowers) invests the recordings with warm, naturalistic tone. For years, the Heartbreakers hung tight to a basic rock ’n’ roll blueprint, but Echo brings into play new and different textures. Benmont Tench’s piano and organ work has always been the keystone in the band’s sound, but these songs give him the opportunity to experiment with other instruments, including clavinet and Chamberlain (a relative of the Mellotron). Rubin encourages the band to try new flavors, but he also brings out the old spirit. “Free Girl Now,” “Accused of Love,” “About to Give Out” and “This One’s For Me” recall the band’s signature sound without simply rehashing it. The vintage-sounding cuts sit comfortably next to future classics like “Counting On You,” “Lonesome Sundown,” “Swingin’,” and “Billy the Kid,” making Echo the perfect mix of tradition and inspiration.. Customer ReviewsEcho (4 stars)This is one of Tom Petty and the Heartbreaker's more intense and dark albums. I cannot say that I am in love with every song on here but there are some beautiful gems such as "Room at the Top","No More", "One more day,One more night","Echo",and "Rhino Skin". This is an album of empowerment to endure, come terms with, and finally get over. Its very relateable. It sets a mood of loss, heart break A Gem (4 stars) To my never-ending amazement, somehow this recording always gets overlooked when the work of this band is discussed. It is a hidden gem! Everything we have come to expect of TP and the band is here. Do not hesitate, buy it! Great Album (5 stars) I came across this album by mere luck and having been enjoying it since. By far the most overlooked album they ever produced. Its worth every penny. With songs like Swingin', Room At the Top, and Won't Last Long, you get typical petty sound with lots of energy. By far one of their best.
