Diana & Marvin – Marvin GayeView More By Marvin Gaye Our ReviewDiana Ross and Marvin Gaye had both moved beyond the pop factory mentality of ‘60s Motown, which makes Diana & Marvin a throwback to an earlier era, when Berry Gordy often doubled up his stars for duet albums. The source material reflects the patchwork playlists of those old projects. “Don’t Knock My Love” is a cover of Wilson Pickett’s Southern-soul beater, while “Pledging My Love” takes on Johnny Ace’s 1954 doo-wop slow dance. Other songs, particularly “My Mistake (Was to Love You),” attempt to recreate the recipe of mid-‘60s Motown hits like “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough.” The finest song might be “Just Say Just Say,” a Nicholas Ashford and Valerie Simpson original that begins like a brooding whisper then slowly climaxes into a declaration of faith. As much as the album mirrors old Motown trends, its primary inspiration is pillowy Philly soul. That sound was in vogue at the time, and is invoked to great effect for “You Are Everything,” “Love Twins,” “You’re a Special Part of Me” and “Stop, Look, Listen (To Your Heart),” the last of which is a Stylistics cover. The elegant Philly sound is a perfect fit for Diana and Marvin, Motown’s classiest couple.. Customer Reviews4 Bonus tracks (4 stars)My friends and I played the heck out of this in '73. Having been diehard MotownManiacs for a decade whenthis was released, it seemed a no brainer. The first release,"Special part of me" we found boring. Apparently we wern't alone. "Mistake" became a pop hit and a SOUL TRAIN favorite. While enjoying the less commercial remakes and the R&B radio fave, "Love Twins", most of us felt there wasn't much real c I'll Keep My Light In My Window (5 stars) is worth the price of this album+++ ....marvin's message--coupled with diana's sensibility. a perfect match. thank you Motown--sometimes your money making strategies actually are inspired. Classic (5 stars) Pure Soul Classic some dated tracks but the bangers like "my mistake" "just say"" and "include me in your ife" are Heavyweights that could go toe to toe with any current star duo must have for music lovers BiographyBorn: March 26, 1944 in Detroit, MIGenre: R&B/Soul Years Active: '60s, '70s, '80s, '90s, '00s, '10s As a solo artist, Diana Ross is one of the most successful female singers of the rock era. If you factor in her work as the lead singer of the Supremes in the 1960s, she may be the most successful. With her friends Mary Wilson, Florence Ballard, and Barbara Martin, Ross formed the Primettes vocal quartet in 1959. In 1960, they were signed to local Motown Records, changing their name to the Supremes in 1961. Martin then left, and the group continued as a trio. Over the next eight years, the Supremes...
