Design of a Decade: 1986-1996 – Janet JacksonView More By Janet Jackson Our ReviewDesign of a Decade puts the spotlight one of the most audacious sonic signatures of the ‘80s. Janet Jackson’s Control (1986) and Rhythm Nation 1814 (1989) spawned an astonishing total of 13 hits. More crucially, the albums completely changed the rules of pop music. Working closely with a tight knit production unit — consisting of producers Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, A&R man John McClain, and multi-instrumentalist Jellybean Johnson — Janet crafted a sound that, for distinctiveness and inventiveness, was rivaled only by her brother Michael and Prince. “Escapade,” “Miss You Much,” and “Love Will Never Do (Without You)” offer an unlikely fusion of ultra-sweet melodies with heavy, almost industrial percussion. “Rhythm Nation” is even harder to categorize — a mix of Funkadelic, Michael Jackson, and Nine Inch Nails, the song is easily one of the boldest songs to ever chart. Janet would continue her domination long after 1996 — the sultry “That’s the Way Love Goes” and the unreleased “Runaway” give a sense of her ‘90s output — but Design of a Decade is a focused summation of her breakthrough ideas.. Customer ReviewsA legend! (5 stars)Janet proves time and time again with these songs that she is a living legend. While some haters out there dismiss her music as fluffy and mumbling, you can't take away that she's had twenty years of hit music. This puts her in a class of Bon Jovi, Whitney, and Madonna. Given that fact alone, it's worth the purchase! Listen to the songs, and it's evident that these are classics! Adrian G. has no clue (5 stars) Adrian G. is an idiot. This album is amazing. She doesn't "whisper" on all of the tracks. One listen to What Have You Done for Me Lately or The Pleasure Principle will tell you. I recommend the whole thing, although making "Runaway" and "Twenty Foreplay" album-only is cheap. Simply! (5 stars) A great collection of Janet's 1st hits....great album...but missing a big chunk of it!!! BiographyBorn: May 16, 1966 in Gary, INGenre: Pop Years Active: '70s, '80s, '90s, '00s, '10s Few celebrity siblings can emerge from the shadows of their already famous relations to become superstars in their own right and with their own distinct personalities. That's exactly what Janet Jackson did in becoming one of the biggest female pop and R&B stars of the '80s and '90s. Since her breakthrough in 1986 with the album Control, Jackson's career as a hitmaker has been a model of consistency, rivaling Madonna and Whitney Houston in terms of pop chart success over the long haul. A big part...
