Dance to the Music – Sly & the Family StoneView More By Sly & the Family Stone Our ReviewWith their second album, Sly & the Family Stone began transforming the pop music landscape. Released in 1968, the album’s title track immediately set radio and dance floors buzzing with its relentless groove and infectious optimism. Entire generations of soul, funk and hip-hop musicians take their cues from the elemental tracks contained here. That said, this is still a group in transformation. “Higher,” a rough prototype for the group’s later hit “I Want To Take You Higher,” and “Dance to the Medley” are inside looks at the group’s improvisational and experimental processes. Their sound was mapped out but, writing — or in this group’s case, uncovering — the songs that could support their explosive jams was still another lesson in an ongoing learning process. The expansive group featuring Jerry Martini’s sax, Cynthia Robinson’s trumpet and Sly and Rosie Stone’s keyboards informed the material with a swinging cinematic exuberance, but it’s the lively vocal interplay (the band had five vocalists) that gives a track like “Ride the Rhythm” its extra rush. The expanded edition includes several bonus cuts: mono single versions of the title track as well as previously unreleased recordings: “We Love All” and a vocally intense cover of Otis Redding’s “I Can’t Turn You Loose” that are worthy additions to the band’s established catalog.. Customer ReviewsFoools. (4 stars)This is NOT the debut. This is LP numero dos. Haters! Fairly impressive debut (3 stars) The Family Stone's first album featured hits such as "Dance to the Music" and "Ride the Rhythm," but also had some psychedelic funk jams such as track 4's medley, which lasts 12:11. It's interesting to listen to but has its ups and downs too. One of the greatest debut albums in rock history.... (5 stars) ...and you can still hear the influence today. Buy it and dance. And smile. BiographyFormed: 1967 in San Francisco, CAGenre: R&B/Soul Years Active: '60s, '70s, '80s Sly & the Family Stone harnessed all of the disparate musical and social trends of the late '60s, creating a wild, brilliant fusion of soul, rock, R&B, psychedelia, and funk that broke boundaries down without a second thought. Led by Sly Stone, the Family Stone was comprised of men and women, and blacks and whites, making the band the first fully integrated group in rock's history. That integration shone through the music, as well as the group's message. Before Stone, very few soul and R&B...
