Collapse Into Now (Deluxe Version) – R.E.M.View More By R.E.M. Our ReviewCollapse Into Now continues the electric pulse of Accelerate and brings it to a new loudness. The days of Stipe mumbling are long passed, but his days of yelling over the band are in full swing. Even when he can think of nothing but “Oh My Heart” to serve as a chorus, he does it with a passion usually reserved for the more topical tunes. “It Happened Today” jangles like the band re-found “Driver 8” and decided to ask for directions. “Every Day Is Yours to Win” swamps up the sound with so many instruments swirling that the band can hardly be called an instrumental three-piece since Mike Mills colors everything in sight. “Discoverer,” “All the Best” and “Mine Smell Like Honey,” with production that ramps up the serrated edges of the group, grind with distortion and an aggression not often associated with the post-Bill Berry group. “Walk It Back” is the piano ballad. “Alligator Aviator Autopilot Antimatter” and “That Someone Is You” are the stream-of-consciousness rockers. “Blue,” the official album closer,” is an extra-terrestrial transmission where it sounds as if Michael Stipe merges with his radio stuck between stations.. Customer ReviewsINSTANT CLASSIC (5 stars)not being a huge R.E.M. fan-I was blown away by this new album. In my 61 years I don't recall ever listening over and over so many times to a new record. But having lived thru the sixty's I don't recall a lot!! Somebody said they forgot to master it-thats hogwash-it is raw just like music is made and meant to sound-Cannot wait to buy the vinyl edition. Most of my old boomer compadres have given up on new music but this album and a lot of t Now I remember why I love R.E.M. (5 stars) It's been a long time coming, but the guys have finally delivered their best album since "New Adventures in HiFi." It's got a little bit of everything that's great about REM. Thanks guys, it's fun to be excited again. BiographyFormed: 1980 in Athens, GAGenre: Rock Years Active: '80s, '90s, '00s, '10s R.E.M. marked the point when post-punk turned into alternative rock. When their first single, "Radio Free Europe," was released in 1981, it sparked a back-to-the-garage movement in the American underground. While there were a number of hardcore and punk bands in the U.S. during the early '80s, R.E.M. brought guitar pop back into the underground lexicon. Combining ringing guitar hooks with mumbled, cryptic lyrics and a D.I.Y. aesthetic borrowed from post-punk, the band simultaneously sounded traditional...
