Citizen Steely Dan 1972-1980 – Steely DanView More By Steely Dan Our ReviewBetween 1972 and 1980 Donald Fagen and Walter Becker had one of the most spectacularly unusual winning streaks in modern pop history, and Citizen Steely Dan collects the entire run. Steely Dan started the ‘70s as long-haired stoners and ended the decade as jazz-pop ironists, but through it all their music retained its essential qualities. Above all, these songs are exemplars of the art of studio recording. No other pop band has paid such attention to the details of its sound design, and “Do It Again,” “Hey Nineteen” and “Black Cow” are still the standard by which hi-fi systems are tested. Then there’s Fagen and Becker’s impeccable taste in collaborators, and their unerring determination to seamlessly blend elements of jazz, rock and pure pop music. Ultimately, what really sets Dan apart from dozens of ‘70s soundalikes is the lyrical content. These songs are peculiar snapshots of modern life, filled with strange characters, bizarre food and drink, and exotic, often seedy, locales. They can be dark and cerebral but because the music is so warm and well crafted, it goes down like Scotch spiked with maple syrup. Sixty-six pieces and not a dud in sight — few have ever had a better run.. Customer ReviewsEasily one of the best albums of all time (5 stars)I bought this the day it was released. For any Steely Dan, rock, or even music fan, this is an essential album to have in your collection. Want to get into Steely Dan? (5 stars) I always wanted to get into Steely Dan. For years I have loved every song I have heard (which wasn't all that many - or at least thats what I though), but never really gave them the time of day for some reason or another. I was in Best Buy or somewhere and stumbled upon it and impulse bought it. I'd have to say, it is one of the best box sets I have ever come upon. I am so glad I made the purchase that day. Just listen to it on shuffle It Doesn't Get Any Better Than This! (5 stars) This is argueably(maybe) the greatest box set ever released. Sixty six tracks, not one of them is a dog!!!! BiographyFormed: 1972 in Los Angeles, CAGenre: Rock Years Active: '70s, '80s, '90s, '00s, '10s Most rock & roll bands are a tightly wound unit that developed their music through years of playing in garages and clubs around their hometown. Steely Dan never subscribed to that aesthetic. As the vehicle for the songwriting of Walter Becker and Donald Fagen, Steely Dan defied all rock & roll conventions. Becker and Fagen never truly enjoyed rock — with their ironic humor and cryptic lyrics, their eclectic body of work shows some debt to Bob Dylan — preferring jazz, traditional...
