Behind the Front – The Black Eyed PeasView More By The Black Eyed Peas Our ReviewBefore they became worldwide pop sensations, the Black Eyed Peas stood alongside Talib Kweli, Mos Def and Jurassic 5 as pillars of a new-school revival of old-school hip-hop values. Like its contemporaneous peer albums Mos Def & Talib Kweli are Black Star and Jurassic 5 LP, Behind the Front reproves the day’s glossy computerized productions in favor of a return to the rotund jazz and soul samples of A Tribe Called Quest. “What It Is,” “Duet” and “The Way U Make Me Feel” embrace the vintage sounds of Rhodes keyboard, trap drums, and upright bass. “Karma” subtly incorporates a slowed-down salsa rhythm, while “Joints & Jam” exudes the enthusiasm of late-‘70s New York party rap. Behind the Front disdains corporate and criminal influences on rap music. As the group states in “Fallin’ Up”: “I see you try to diss our function by stating that we can't rap / Is it cause we don't wear Tommy Hilfiger or baseball caps / We don't use dollars to represent / We just use our inner sense and talent.” The disco beat of “Be Free” hints at the Peas’ future, but the rest of Behind the Front encapsulates the beginning of the group’s ethos.. Customer ReviewsHey you other reviewers, you're a bunch of knobs. (4 stars)Let me tell you why. This is an older album. Long before you ever heard of them. This was the stuff they made before they sold out and got all fergie. The release date up there that you are looking at is incorrect. Personally, I dig this album. It's great. I think the funniest review, is the one that says, "this is nothing like their old stuff." That cracked me up. Open your ears, and listen to some "old stuff" Attention Stupid People! (3 stars) This is not The E.N.D. obviously. Nor is it a brand new album. It's really old from like pre-Fergie days. So shut up. Pre-sell out BEP (5 stars) I first saw BEP at a college show in our basketball stadium - raw, passionate, undeniable talent... they had Kim with them then. (What ever happened to her?!?) The tunes on this album all combined to make one unique, jammin', funny-as-hell album that make you want to listen from beginning to end. "I came to bring the rain..." I thought it couldn't get any better than this, and unfortunately it didn't! Bridging the Gap was good, but BiographyFormed: 1995 in Los Angeles, CAGenre: Hip Hop/Rap Years Active: '90s, '00s, '10s The Black Eyed Peas transcended hip-hop to become one of the most commercially successful pop groups of the 2000s. Their career began modestly, with a pair of albums inspired by the positive-minded likes of A Tribe Called Quest and De La Soul. After adding Fergie, the group’s pop instincts reached full flight. Ignited by the Top Ten hit “Where Is the Love?” and the Grammy-winning party anthem “Let’s Get It Started,” the group scored three multi-platinum albums in 2003’s Elephunk, 2005’s Monkey Business,...
