Al Green: Greatest Hits – Al GreenView More By Al Green Our ReviewWith the help of Hi Records producer Willie Mitchell, Al Green recorded some of the finest soul music of the ‘70s. The ‘60s were over and it was time to refashion the sound; the grooves were tight, seasoned with strings and horns (in close relation with the Northern Philly Soul) and whatever else could punctuate Green’s gospel-influenced R&B-derived sexy soul in the simmering intensity of the Memphis night. It simply doesn’t get better than “Tired of Being Alone,” “Let’s Stay Together” and “I’m Still In Love With You.” Green’s otherworldly improvisations in such compact space made the singles all the more revelatory. He knew how to get the most of out of a simple phrase and the productions knew how to squeeze every essential nuance into the limited space without losing an ounce of power. “Love and Happiness” expands out to five minutes, but mostly these are three minutes of pure joy. His albums were all solid releases, but you can’t beat a strong string of singles either.. Customer ReviewsGreat, but... (4 stars)This is a great album by a great artist, but the cd version (which is the one I have) has 5 more songs than this version. iTunes needs to get that 15 track version!!! Music for the New Generation (5 stars) The music is amazing in everyway. Growing up, I knew only of Al Green because my uncle listened to it, as well as my father, however my father not so much. But as the music would play, you would see everyone tapping their feet, to the music. From what I've taken in from all of this is that the music from the 70's was indeed music of love. Today's love songs can't even be placed in the same bracket as this masterpiece. I think the younger gen Where are the missing songs? (5 stars) I love this album, but the weird thing is that the review mentioned 18 songs and the comment by Stack of Hay mentioned 15 songs on the CD version, and you guys at ITunes only offer 10 songs... What happened to the other songs? BiographyBorn: April 13, 1946 in Forrest City, ARGenre: R&B/Soul Years Active: '60s, '70s, '80s, '90s, '00s, '10s Al Green was the first great soul singer of the '70s and arguably the last great Southern soul singer. With his seductive singles for Hi Records in the early '70s, Green bridged the gap between deep soul and smooth Philadelphia soul. He incorporated elements of gospel, interjecting his performances with wild moans and wails, but his records were stylish, boasting immaculate productions that rolled along with a tight beat, sexy backing vocals, and lush strings. The distinctive Hi Records sound that...
