A Kind of Magic – QueenView More By Queen Our ReviewA Kind of Magic is regarded as the unofficial soundtrack to the 1986 film Highlander, a tale of immortal Scottish warriors battling in modern-day New York. It’s not hard to see why the producers wanted Queen for the score. There were a lot of hard rock bands striving for majesty in the mid-‘80s, but none could match Queen, who practically wrote the book on blood-pumping songs with “We Will Rock You.” Songs here like “Gimme the Prize,” “Princes of the Universe” and “One Vision” are completely over the top, but that doesn’t mean they aren’t excellent battle anthems. There are also a few gauzy, floating ballads, but the real gem is “Pain Is So Close to Pleasure,” which didn’t appear in Highlander, but instead reveals Mercury’s love for classic Motown. Although Mercury’s health would undergo a sharp downturn following A Kind of Magic, the album features some of the most passionate singing of his career. Like the characters in Highlander, Mercury sings these songs not as a rock frontman, but as an immortal warrior.. Customer ReviewsThe most under-rated Queen album (5 stars)This is one of the great albums of the 80's - a companion to one of the great 80's films. I wasn't sure about this record when I bought it in '86 - it wasn't like anything I'd ever heard before, especially the quirky title track. However, after a couple of listens most of these songs took hold of me. "One Year of Love" is a gorgeous torch song - I'd like to see a contestent on "American Idol" kill that tune one day. & A Classic . . . (5 stars) This album is unofficially the soundtrack to the movie "Highlander" - but only because Queen opted to release it before the movie's debut. There is no content on the album that is not a part of the movie, and nothing from the movie left off of the album. A wonderful showcase for the group's range and flexibility, this album was under-appreciated when Queen first released it. It took me 10 years to even find a copy - and I was lo A Kind of Magic (5 stars) Ole Freddie did not realize "Highlander" would be as big as it is and still is today. He didn't want the movie title on his album. However, he associated himself with a really stupid spaceman, go figure. This music can transfuse and make you feel sophomoric. You just know, there is something out there. This very talented song bird fused rock and classical like no other. If you are going to blow your speckers anyway, do it wit BiographyFormed: 1971 in London, EnglandGenre: Rock Years Active: '70s, '80s, '90s, '00s Few bands embodied the pure excess of the '70s like Queen. Embracing the exaggerated pomp of prog rock and heavy metal, as well as vaudevillian music hall, the British quartet delved deeply into camp and bombast, creating a huge, mock-operatic sound with layered guitars and overdubbed vocals. Queen's music was a bizarre yet highly accessible fusion of the macho and the fey. For years, their albums boasted the motto "no synthesizers were used on this record," signaling their allegiance with the legions...
