Emergency – Kool & the GangView More By Kool & the Gang Our ReviewEmergency was Kool & The Gang’s last really big album, thereby ending an astonishing winning streak that had begun ten years earlier, with 1974’s Wild and Peaceful. You can track the evolution of funk music by the albums in Kool & The Gang’s catalog, and Emergency finds them moving forward once again and embracing the new technology of the mid-'80s. The title song is sassy and brassy, incorporating the mechanical hard rock riffs popularized by then-current rap groups like Run DMC. Even better is the snappy electro funk of “Misled” and “Surrender,” which sit easily alongside contemporaneous hits by Prince. Meanwhile, the new wave-ish “You Are the One” proffers a swifter strain of electro-boogie that could well be termed “aerobic funk.” The album’s biggest hit, however, was “Cherish” an ethereal Adult Contemporary ballad — the kind of song that will live as long as radio dedication shows keep running. The single symbolizes Kool & The Gang’s complete evolution — they started their career as a jazzy funk ensemble, and ended it as purveyors of grown-up urban pop.. Customer ReviewsGreat album (4 stars)To me, this is the second best Kool & the Gang album that had J.T. as the lead singer. His smooth voice on the not released "Bad Woman" is his best work with the group. Emergency has the group's second biggest hit with Cherish and the other top 10 hits "Fresh" and "Misled"; those songs were key to the R & B/pop charts crossovers in the 80s. For Kool fans this album is a must have. THE BEST KOOL AND THE GANG ALBUM WITH JT (5 stars) I put this as my best Kool and the Gang album...the next one would be Strait from the Hart album......and JT still looks like Donny Simpson from Video Soul pretty much crap (1 star) I remember absolutely loving misled in high school but thinking the rest of the album was pretty much crap. Well 25 years later my opinion is the same - misled is the best song period by kool and the gang and the rest of this album is a waste of recording media... BiographyFormed: 1964 in Jersey City, NJGenre: R&B/Soul Years Active: '60s, '70s, '80s, '90s, '00s, '10s Formed as a jazz ensemble in the mid-'60s, Kool & the Gang became one of the most inspired and influential funk units during the '70s, and one of the most popular R&B groups of the '80s after their breakout hit "Celebration" in 1979. Just as funky as James Brown or Parliament (and sampled almost as frequently), Kool & the Gang relied on their jazz backgrounds and long friendship to form a tightly knit group...
