New Blood (Special Edition) – Peter GabrielView More By Peter Gabriel Our ReviewNew Blood is the final piece of a conceptual trilogy that started with 2010’s Scratch My Back. On that orchestral project, Gabriel interpreted other songwriters’ works, implementing a “no drumkits, no guitars” aesthetic. Six artists he covered returned the favor; in a series of singles, each recorded a song from the Gabriel songbook. For 2011’s New Blood, Gabriel revisited his own history with the Scratch My Back approach. Stretching back to 1977 (“Solsbury Hill”) up through 2002 (“Darkness”), this album let Gabriel address his career through an early sixtysomething’s perspective and voice (singing and artistic). Subtle brass, woodwinds, strings, and a choir replace the pounding drums and tense guitars of “Intruder.” The piano at the heart of “Intruder” remains, but it’s set to a lush sea of strings instead of synthesizers, bass guitar, and tom-toms. Two Gabriel hits receive very different treatment, with “In Your Eyes” reimagined as a powerful overture and “Don't Give Up” (with Norwegian vocalist Ane Brun in the Kate Bush role) reborn as a chamber-pop triumph.. Customer ReviewsCome Down Gabriel... (3 stars)It seems that it has become a cliche'. Our once "Rock Gods" of the airwaves have to take their classic hits and re-tinker with them through the tapestry of orchestration. It's like they have to recolor a picture they've already drawn with a new box of crayons. But there is a danger of taking away from the original image and the colors may run and images fade not being what it once was. This concept is nothing new and ha WOW! (5 stars) …just WOW! I am completely blown away by this! Gabriel has completely re-imagined some of his greatest tracks and given them 'New Blood' with an orchestra. No guitars. Very little percussion. Vocally, PG is at the top of his game… sounding better than ever. Great stuff! People have lost their minds! (1 star) The woman on Dont Give Up (one of the best tracks EVER recorded) sounds like someone's grandmother. This music has lost all of its soul and passion. Bad covers, poorly produced. Nothing reimagined here, just rehashed. BiographyBorn: February 13, 1950 in London, EnglandGenre: Rock Years Active: '70s, '80s, '90s, '00s, '10s As the leader of Genesis in the early '70s, Peter Gabriel helped move progressive rock to new levels of theatricality. He was no less ambitious as a solo artist, but he was more subtle in his methods. With his first eponymous solo album in 1977, he began exploring darker, more cerebral territory, incorporating avant-garde, electronic, and worldbeat influences into his music. The record, as well as its two similarly titled successors, established Gabriel as a critically acclaimed cult artist, and...
