View More By Peter Gabriel Our ReviewAs always, even Peter Gabriel’s album of covers is conceptual. This isn’t just a collection of 12 covers, six from established veterans (David Bowie, Randy Newman, Neil Young) and six from newer artists (Radiohead, Bon Iver, Arcade Fire, etc.), but there’s to be a companion piece entitled I’ll Scratch Yours that features those artists covering Peter Gabriel songs. Gabriel slows everything down to a muted trickle. Paul Simon’s “The Boy In the Bubble” has its buoyant bounce removed leaving just piano and strings. David Bowie’s “Heroes” crawls with its sense of glam replaced by an end- of-the-world-solemnity. Randy Newman’s “I Think It’s Going to Rain Today” comes close to the original recording, but that’s about it. Bon Iver’s “Flume,” Magnetic Fields’ “The Book of Love,” Arcade Fire’s “My Body Is A Cage” sound more like modern classical pieces with orchestral arrangements filling the soundstage. It’s a brilliant, somber move by a man known for his great theatrics. The “Special Edition” features three remixes and a cover of Ray Davies and the Kinks’ classic “Waterloo Sunset” given the Gabriel twist.. Customer ReviewsDark and darker (4 stars)I have read stories in the past regarding Peter's depressed state of mind. I think this album is reflective of that. I suspect this material may be touch closer to Gabriel's state of mind than many or most of the songs he has penned himself. Naturally, an artist of Peter's stature will always create some brilliant moments. I do enjoy the starkness of much of the material here. The orchestrations are often bare, but beautiful. Peters voice is Don't Touch that Button! (1 star) Welcome to the Tar Pits--where old Rock stars go to die--swallowed up by their impending mortality. I never thought PG would join the pantheon of the old codgers who put out such pablum as to punctuate their discography with a terminal period. Moribund the Burgermiester just phoned in some vocal tracks and a session mixer threw a layer of strings over them. They took a panoply of the best music ever found left of the dial and tramp Its called evolution... get over yourselves. (5 stars) Musicians grow and change. Sorry to everyone who wants to hear a remake of "So". This is NOT it. It is something all together different and beautiful. This is going to be amazing live.
