Roadsinger (Bonus Track Version) – Cat StevensView More By Cat Stevens Our ReviewIt’s a rite of passage for many aspiring musicians to pick up an acoustic guitar and learn a few tunes by the iconic ‘70s singer/songwriter Cat Stevens. So it’s perfectly natural that modern artists such as Michelle Branch, James Morrison, and Gunnar Nelson contribute seamless backing vocals to Roadsinger, the new album from Yusuf, the artist formerly known as Cat Stevens. A mostly self-produced project, it features co-production work from Martin Terefe (Jason Mraz, KT Tunstall, Martin Sexton) on three tracks. Themes range from the intimately personal to the broadly spiritual, and Yusuf's trademark gift for vivid narrative is alive and well in the title track's literal scene setting and in the beautifully laid out allegory of "All Kinds of Roses." Yusuf can still pen a timeless tune, too; "Thinking 'Bout You" and "Everytime I Dream" have the sounds of instant musical old friends even at first listen. Equally engaging are the warm, largely acoustic arrangements on tracks such as "Welcome Home" and "Dream On (Until...)" which so perfectly frame his comforting voice.. Customer ReviewsUnderstanding Yusuf (4 stars)Yusuf might be one of the most honorable, ethical artists in modern times. He walked away from the height of material wealth, fame and fortune, and left it in order to follow his spiritual beliefs. How many of us would have the courage and self-discipline to do the same? His music is timeless because his spirit is timeless. His art resonates as much in 2009 as it did in 1972, because he sings the truth. Lastly, he is not a monk, nor does he Welcome home, Yusuf! (5 stars) To the person who reviewed this album and stated ignorant lies, please be informed before you disparage someone. Cat Stevens never disowned his country; he still lives in London and has built Islamic schools there. He did not become a Muslim cleric, he become a Muslim. He did not speak out against the U.S. after 9-11, he spoke out against those who were involved in those terrible events, stating "my religion was hijacked." Being a He may call himself Yusuf... (5 stars) But this is pure Cat Stevens! And it is a more mature sound for him, which suits him well! Peace Train Blues is a great number! It's a wonderful re-working of the classic, and proves that even a monk can have some blues in his soul! Welcome back Yusuf! Please don't make this your last stop on that train!
