Natural High – The CommodoresView More By The Commodores Our ReviewLionel Richie’s ballad “Three Times a Lady” became a massive crossover hit for the Commodores, overshadowing everything else on 1978’s Natural High. That’s too bad, because while “Three Times a Lady” opened a new chapter in the band’s story (one could even say it is the beginning of Richie’s solo career), the rest of the album shows how well the band worked as an integrated unit. “Fire Girl” and “I Like What You Do” are ideal fusions of Richie’s pop songwriting and the rest of the group’s sharp-edged playing. “Flying High” is even better — with underpinnings of jazz and acoustic folk, the swift-moving song is reminiscent of the Isley Brothers and the Doobie Brothers, yet it remains patently Commodores. The band’s scorching grooves are here reduced to a simmer for maximum potency. “X-Rated Movie” is a sweltering riff on par with anything by Johnny “Guitar” Watson, but the real gems are “Visions,” and especially, “Say Yeah.” The songs give Richie the opportunity to show off his delicate side, and when the party-hearty band slows its funk riffs to a crawl the results are intoxicating.. Customer ReviewsCommodores rule (4 stars)Flying high is one of the best songs the Commodres have ever done! It is too bad a live version was not released. The classics Say yeah, Such a woman, and I like what you do are great songs demonstrating their range! Great (5 stars) Well, although i have this on vinyl and there is one extra track...it's amazing! i love every track and x rated movie is a great spin of a porno with harmonies that ignite my innermost sexual desires for lionel richie. The first side (tracks 1-4) is indeed amazing and worth the purchase and the rest is still great but on the slow dance side. well enjoy i hope this review sums up that you should buy it...but really on vinyl if you can find i Natural High, 13 March 2009 (5 stars) One of the best Soul groups of all time. This album was a smash back in the day and sounds just as good today as it did back in 1978. Just brilliant!!
