Sometime In New York City (Remastered) – John LennonView More By John Lennon Our ReviewWhen John Lennon left The Beatles, he was determined to speak his mind. He did in-depth interviews and released several solo albums that addressed his personal pains and insecurities. With 1972’s Some Time in New York City, Lennon (with wife Yoko Ono contributing musically) turned to political protest and topical songs, which dates the album and makes many songs feel like slogans or political cheerleading. Yet musically, Lennon never loses his command. His backing group for the first two sides of this double album, Elephant’s Memory, is strong and confident. However, the wide range of then-topical subjects (the jailing of political radicals Angela Davis and John Sinclair, the Attica State Prison shootings, Northern Ireland, and the women’s liberation movement) make the album more like the newspaper its front cover suggests than a timeless musical achievement. The additional live tracks from what were the third and fourth sides include appearances by Eric Clapton, George Harrison, Billy Preston, Keith Moon, and Frank Zappa & The Mothers of Invention, where fascinating chaos often overtakes the jam sessions.. Customer ReviewsSometime in NY city (1 star)so bad that i have no comment. A couple of classic tracks (3 stars) The early 70s activist act wears thin on this one but it still has some classic tracks that are must haves for all who admire Lennon. For me, the highlights on Sometime in New York City are New York City, Sunday Bloody Sunday and the Luck of the Irish. The live treats are Well (Baby Please Don't Go) with a blistering guitar solo by Frank Zappa and Cold Turkey (featuring George Harrison!) Yoko's best tracks are Sisters O Sisters and We're All The pope ... (5 stars) yeah teh Pope smokes dope everyday! When I first heard John screaming this I love dit!
