A Decade of Hits 1969-1979 – The Allman Brothers BandView More By The Allman Brothers Band Our ReviewThere are many Southern Rock groups, but there is only one Allman Brothers Band. At once sophisticated and primal, adept at both traditional blues and exploratory jazz, this Georgia-bred combo set a high standard of excellence that few acts have matched since. A Decade of Hits 1969-1979 distills the Allmans down to their essence, offering samples both of their improvisational flights and well-honed radio singles. The crucial event in the band’s history was the death of lead guitarist Duane Allman in 1971 — his brilliant playing (combined with brother Gregg’s raw-throated vocals and soulful organ) defined the ensemble’s sound. From the searing “One Way Out” to the dreamy “Midnight Rider” and the challenging “In Memory of Elizabeth Reed,” Duane’s playing was remarkable for its taste, passion and sensitivity. Surprisingly, the Allman Brothers carried on with distinction after Duane’s passing. Dickie Betts’ clean guitar lines make tunes like “Ramblin’ Man” and “Jessica” sparkle, while keyboardist Chuck Leavell lends jazzy highlights to the later recordings. A Decade of Hits necessarily fails to include some of the lengthier jams that the Allmans were known for. That qualifier aside, this collection reflects the eclectic output of this hugely influential group during its glory years.. Customer ReviewsNot a true depiction of the band (3 stars)I am a huge fan of the Allman Brothers, but this is not the real deal. The Allman Brothers were known for their astronomical epic jams like "Mountain Jam" "You Don't Love Me" and the Fillmore Version of "In Memory of Elizabeth Reed" and "Whipping Post." If you are completley unfarmiliar to the Allmans, this will give you the wrong experience. I suggest buying LIVE AT FILLMORE EAST. You'll throw this in Best of my Jam albums (5 stars) I own plenty of jam and southern rock such as Lynyrd Skynyrd, Bob Dylan, The Grateful Dead, The Band, Phish, DMB, and much more. This has got to be my best cd purchase of that genre. Amazing songs such as Statesboro Blues, Ramblin Man(a must download), Midnight Rider, Melissa, Blue Sky, and Whipping Post. Buy this album and I promise you will be attached to it like a brother. Awesome (5 stars) Dude, its got all their best songs - Blue sky, Melissa, Jessica, Ramblin' man, Midnight Rider, Ain't waistin' time no more, etc. I can't name a song that should be on here that isn't. BiographyFormed: 1969 in Macon, GAGenre: Rock Years Active: '60s, '70s, '80s, '90s, '00s, '10s The story of the Allman Brothers Band is one of triumph, tragedy, redemption, dissolution, and a new redemption. Over nearly 30 years, they've gone from being America's single most influential band to a has-been group trading on past glories,...
