View More By Creedence Clearwater Revival Our ReviewCreedence Clearwater Revival brought their roots-based rock ‘n’ roll to AM radios everywhere at the end of the ‘60s with an unprecedented string of hit singles that highlighted John Fogerty’s knack for the pop hook alongside a soulful howl that could skin a cat. Creedence, however, were far more than an automatic hit-making machine. Their roots were always right there on the surface for anyone to hear and their choice of covers over the years showcased a band that had spent a decade learning their trade in many rough-hewn bars. The band is tight and concise throughout. “Susie Q” and “I Heard It Through the Grapevine” (both here in their single edit incarnations) became hits, but their range spreads from R&B (“I Put a Spell On You”) to blues (“Before You Accuse Me,” “My Baby Left Me”) to early rock ‘n’ roll (“Good Golly Miss Molly,” “Ooby Dooby”), all performed with equal confidence and conviction..
