Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers – Tom Petty & The HeartbreakersView More By Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers Our ReviewTom Petty & The Heartbreakers' eponymous 1976 album was one of the most assured and accomplished debuts of the decade. Its jangly guitar blast of roots-charged rock not only helped slow the disco chart juggernaut and blow the pretense out of arena rock, it helped pave the way for the punk and new-wave revolution that quickly followed. The breakout single "American Girl" proudly displays not only Petty's nasally Dylan-does-the Byrds affectations, but his pop-savvy roots as well. That's former band mate Dwight Twilley (Petty had briefly played bass in Twilley's band) and fellow Tulsa pop savant Phil Seymour doing the harmonies. Petty's influences here also span Buddy Holly (the frantic "Rockin' Around," "Anything That's Rock ‘n’ Roll") and the bluesy, Stones-scented hit "Breakdown," all delivered with such aggressive passion as to make their antecedents almost irrelevant.. Customer ReviewsA Great First Album. (5 stars)1978. Freshman year. 8am. Stoners in the parking lot. Getting dropped off in my parents '76 AMC Gremlin. I get out with my backpack full of Books and I slink by the seniors hangin' by their cherry red '69 Cameros, '67 Chargers, '76 Ford Broncos blasting music from their Alpine car stereos. Usually I am greeted with disdain of the upperclassmen and the rightous sounds of Van Halen's "Eruption", "Running with the Devil" There’s Nothing Like Old Tom Petty (5 stars) If it weren’t for Tom Petty, I wouldn’t love music as much as I do today. Tom, if you ever read this, thanks. Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers is truly Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers best album – so far! First, I must say that I am psyched for Mojo: the next Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers album scheduled for release this spring. Right now I am listening to a song that will be on that album entitled “Good Enough” off the Tom Petty My Favorite album of all time.... (5 stars) I have over 7000 songs on my ipod and had forgotten about this album a long time ago...sadly so. I just downloaded it and now I remember why I listened to it almost exclusively the summer it was released. It's not over produced like so many albums today, you can here the the scuffs and slides and it sounds like real music...I wish The Heartbreakers could make albums like this again. I recommend this album highly.
