Long After Dark (Remastered) – Tom Petty & The HeartbreakersView More By Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers Our ReviewWhile it was not as successful as its predecessors —Damn the Torpedoes and Hard Promises — 1982’s Long After Dark is arguably better than either of them. “You Got Lucky” was the album’s big hit, and its moody synthesizer was a new look for Petty, a devotee of old-school production values. “Deliver Me,” “Change of Heart” and “Straight Into Darkness” are every bit as catchy and punchy as “Refugee” or “The Waiting.” While Petty was continuing to refine his mastery of the three-chord pop anthem — does rock music get more basic than “The Same Old You”? — he was also testing out new kinds of songwriting. “We Stand a Chance” is Petty’s take on the girl-group singles of his youth — with its Phil Spector drumbeat and handclaps, the song is a rock band’s interpretation of the Ronettes or the Shangri-Las. The album’s closing song isn’t rock at all. With its acoustic guitar and gently brushed drums, “A Wasted Life” has the feel of an after-hours jam session, and Petty’s coaxing, near-falsetto vocals are straight R&B, a loving impersonation of Al Green.. Customer ReviewsA very underated album (4 stars)Full Moon Fever was released in 1989. This became Tom Petty's most successful album. Before Full Moon Fever was released, Long After Dark may have been Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers best album of the 1980s. As a Petty fan, I think it may be one of their most ovverated albums. They often opened the tour with the song 'One Story Town,' as they do on this album. The only song that got significant commercial attention on this record is "y Too often overlooked (5 stars) This is a great album from start to finish. Most people ignore this album (other than "You Got Lucky"). Its often overshadowed by "Damn the Torpedos", "Full Moon Fever" & "Greatest Hits", which are all excellent albums. This album stands up right along side all of his better known albums. Tracks like "A One Story Town", "Staight Into Darkness", "Change of Heart", &quo a hidden gem (5 stars) while you got lucky was the chosen single, it is the weakest cut on the album, not a bad song but compared to other great TP cuts it doesnt stand. Change of Heart, Straight into Darkness and Deliver Me are the real gems on this album. This truly is an underrated album and like other reviewers I agree, there really isnt a bad cut on this album, it has strength from beginning to end.
