461 Ocean Blvd. (Deluxe Edition) – Eric ClaptonView More By Eric Clapton Our ReviewThis 1974 release, his first studio album in four years (and first since kicking his heroin problems), announced the arrival of a new Clapton: desperately trying to shed his guitar-god reputation, he emerged as a more polished, more focused mainstream rocker. Sure, there are still a number of blues covers and ample six-string wizardry to be found here ("Motherless Children," "Steady Rollin' Man"), but there's also a laid-back, easy flow. Clapton's own songwriting ("Give Me Strength," "Let It Grow") showed a newfound emotional maturity, and his cover of Bob Marley's "I Shot the Sheriff" (amazingly, a chart-topping single) found him expanding his musical horizons. 461 balances Clapton's guitar mastery, songwriting skills, relaxed vocals, and refined taste as well as anything he's recorded.. Customer ReviewsA Strong Return (4 stars)After leaving the scene for awhile due to his heroin addiction, Eric Clapton made a strong comeback with 461 Ocean Blvd. A lot of the songs have a easy going laid-back sound to them. Where the album truly shines though is where it breaks the mold set by others on this album. Motherless Children with its steady rhythm and great guitar playing and I Shot the Sheriff, a re-make of a Bob Marley classic, which is better than the original in my op Clapton's Best (5 stars) When I first listened to the original LP back in the late 70's, I liked it alot. I would have given it four stars. I couldn't get enough of "Motherless Children", "I Shot the Sheriff", and "Mainline Florida". But the rest of the album was too melancholy. This deluxe edition makes up for that in spades. Beyond the original ten tracks, this new work adds sixteen live tracks that includes most of his greatest recor Nice Expansion (4 stars) There are so many deluxe editions out there, because there are so many classic albums that deserve that sort of treatment. 461 Ocean Boulevard, by Eric Clapton, is probably one of the most long-awaited deluxe edition releases. And just why is that? 'Cause 461 Ocean Boulevard is one of the best Eric Clapton solo albums (And Eric Clapton was one of the greatest guitarists of all time, so that means it's REALLY good). As I said in my review of BiographyBorn: March 30, 1945 in Ripley, Surrey, EnglandGenre: Rock Years Active: '60s, '70s, '80s, '90s, '00s, '10s By the time Eric Clapton launched his solo career with the release of his self-titled debut album in mid-1970, he was long established as one of the world's major rock stars due to his group affiliations — the Yardbirds, John Mayall's Bluesbreakers, Cream, and Blind Faith — which had demonstrated his claim to being the best rock guitarist of his generation. That it took Clapton so long to go out on his own, however, was evidence of a degree of reticence unusual for one of his stature....
