Clapton – Eric ClaptonView More By Eric Clapton Our ReviewIt’s sometimes difficult to imagine that Eric Clapton was once a fantastic hard rocker. The Cream reunion of recent years established that ol’ Slowhand could crank up the volume when necessary, but this album of leisurely-paced covers (and a few originals) is where Clapton finds himself naturally suited as a performer. Clapton’s soulful vocals and deft guitarwork is naturally complemented by tunes from Fats Waller, Irving Berlin and Hoagy Carmichael and guests like Steve Winwood, Allen Toussaint, Wynton Marsalis and Derek Trucks make this an album of elite musicians doing what they do best. “Travelin’ Alone” is a perfect cruise through Clapton’s blues roots. “Judgement Day,” “How Deep Is the Ocean” and “Can’t Hold Out Much Longer,” with a tough harmonica growl, are the stuff that makes the legend. Clapton’s natural abilities make the tunes sound so easy. But rest assured, the deep competence he brings to “Diamonds Made from Rain” and “Autumn Leaves” is not so easily replicated. iTunes LP adds photos, liner notes from fellow guitarist and coproducer Doyle Bramhall, and more.. Customer ReviewsAt age 65, has Clapton still got "it"? (5 stars)The guitar work and vocals are as smooth as ever. Technically speaking the producers did a fine job bringing out his talents and those of the other artists on the album. As I have studied Clapton's work over the years I have come to the conclusion that his playing as he's gotten older has improved, or perhaps put differently, has become more subtle and engaging as it has become more sparse. Rather than feeling compelled to fill every moment Alongtimefan (3 stars) The jury is still out on whether I'm going to buy this album....Eric deserves the right to produce anything he wants, but this might be a little too mellow for my taste....hoping it will grow on me Excellent (5 stars) Excellent album! Eric Clapton never disappoints and this album is just another example of his proficient knowledge of the blues. Great job! Now just come to a city near me! BiographyBorn: March 30, 1945 in Ripley, Surrey, EnglandGenre: Rock Years Active: '60s, '70s, '80s, '90s, '00s, '10s By the time Eric Clapton launched his solo career with the release of his self-titled debut album in mid-1970, he was long established as one of the world's major rock stars due to his group affiliations — the Yardbirds, John Mayall's Bluesbreakers, Cream, and Blind Faith — which had demonstrated his claim to being the best rock guitarist of his generation. That it took Clapton so long to go out on his own, however, was evidence of a degree of reticence unusual for one of his stature....
