God & Guns (Special Edition) – Lynyrd SkynyrdView More By Lynyrd Skynyrd Our ReviewGary Rossington may be the only original member left — most of the band has met with tragedy — and singer Johnny Van Zant may never equal his older brother Ronnie’s empathetic Southern drawl, but with ex-Blackfoot guitarist Rickey Medlocke aboard, there are still plenty of chances to build on the legacy. A few tunes here strike a definite nerve. “Southern Ways” chimes with a lick reminiscent of “Sweet Home Alabama” but slowed by age. “Unwrite That Song” beats with a country song’s heart. “Floyd” rattles with a nasty hook and guest vocals from Rob Zombie. The title track uses a subtler acoustic touch. “Skynyrd Nation” huffs and puffs with the bravado one might expect from an intended anthem (Van Zant even calls for everyone to “put your hands in the air” with a sly, demented laugh). The production, however, obscures some of the better moments. “Still Unbroken” and “Simple Life” are solid tunes that use a hard- rock band’s attack and a wall of sound where you need to listen closer to hear the intricacies that have always made Lynyrd Skynyrd one of the greats.. Customer ReviewsEven better than expected. (5 stars)Most who are complaining that this isn't the 'old' Skynyrd probably weren't even alive or at least not old enough to be real fans back in the 70's. Little brother and all have been doing this for 22 years - much longer than the 'old' band. In other words, why do we have to keep comparing them? The Stones aren't the old Stones. Neither is Neil Young, The Who or anyone else from that era (except the Allmans). For Souther Rock of THIS era, GOd and Gunss (5 stars) obviously not the skynyrd of old, but still good as hell Outstanding (5 stars) Outstanding quality and a new level of songwriting for the 2nd generation of Skynyrd. The Rock songs in fact Rock especially "Still Unbroken" & "Floyd" and the country songs are as endering to America as anything John Mellencamp ever commited to song. Long live Skynyrd!!! BiographyFormed: 1965 in Jacksonville, FLGenre: Rock Years Active: '60s, '70s, '80s, '90s, '00s, '10s Lynyrd Skynyrd was the definitive Southern rock band, fusing the overdriven power of blues-rock with a rebellious Southern image and a hard rock swagger. Skynyrd never relied on the jazzy improvisations of the Allman Brothers. Instead, they were a hard-living, hard-driving rock & roll band — they may have jammed endlessly on-stage, but their music remained firmly entrenched in blues, rock, and country. For many, Lynyrd Skynyrd's redneck image tended to obscure the songwriting skills of...
