1984 – Van HalenView More By Van Halen Our ReviewThe hit singles “Jump” and “I’ll Wait” gave people the wrong idea about this album. Their shocking, shiny synth riffs gave off the impression than Van Halen, the great guitar band of the late ‘70s and early ‘80s, had gone soft — or at least pop. Yet, once past the introductory “1984” and the hit singles, the album turns aggressive. David Lee Roth swings from the rafters with a vocal style that is one part carnival barker, two parts hard-rock madman. His screams at the beginning of “Panama” set the tone as Eddie Van Halen throws off a multitude of riffs at an alarming pace and the rhythm section pounds in its own elastic rhythm. “Top Jimmy” swings with a dance groove that’s always been at the heart of the band’s rock attack. “Drop Dead Legs” turns up the funk. “Hot for Teacher” is the band at their wacky best. “House of Pain” recalls the dark, foreboding funk of Fair Warning. It would be David Lee Roth’s final album with the group. They would never sound so loose again.. Customer ReviewsOne Of Their Best (5 stars)1984 has a lot of hits that will be recognizable to even the most casual Van Halen fans. Jump, Panama, and Hot for Teacher all became VH staples. Other songs that I like a lot but don't get as much recognition are Top Jimmy and Drop Dead Legs. You can't go wrong with any of these songs, and this along with their debut are probably the two best albums for those getting into Van Halen. If anyone already has most of these songs and is looki 1st & last Roth-era albums are da BOMB!!! (5 stars) Their 1st album was amazing because almost every song on it became a hit. But this album should be well know throughout the world because of Panama and Jump. To me every Van Halen album is good because they're my favortite band, so GET THIS ALBUM!! There can be only one (5 stars) While this legendary group has seen a few different faces, I think it's unanimous among true VH fans that there really is only one true Van Halen - that being Diamond Dave on the mic and Michael Anthony backing him up. Of course, I haven't seen young Wolfgang take the stage, nor have I heard his stylings on the four, but we can all agree that Michael is a tough act to follow. I have the utmost respect for him and his choices and I admire his BiographyFormed: 1974 in Pasadena, CAGenre: Rock Years Active: '70s, '80s, '90s, '00s, '10s With their 1978 eponymous debut, Van Halen simultaneously rewrote the rules of rock guitar and hard rock in general. Guitarist Eddie Van Halen redefined what electric guitar could do, developing a blindingly fast technique with a variety of self-taught two-handed tapping, hammer-ons, pull-offs, and effects that mimicked the sounds of machines and animals. It was wildly inventive and over the top, equaled only by vocalist David Lee Roth, who brought the role of a metal singer to near-performance art...
