Our Review

If What’s the 411? introduced Mary J. Blige’s attitude and spellbinding vocal talents, then My Life proved the depth and complexity of her art. Blige refuses to show the evolution of a relationship in chronological terms; rather than adhere to the rules of album-making, she remains truthful to life, which doesn’t compartmentalize feelings. My Life is extraordinary because it expresses elation, desperation, affection, and depression — often in the same moment. The album’s songs refer to different segments of soul music history. “Mary Jane (All Night Long)” blends elements of the Mary Jane Girls and Teddy Pendergrass; “You Bring Me Joy” samples Barry White; the title track borrows from Roy Ayers’ “Everybody Loves the Sunshine.” The lyrics were penned entirely by Blige, and the album’s story is told in her performance. She conveys emotion with such nakedness and intensity that it often feels like we are sharing her experiences in real time. Her fearlessness culminates in the album’s lone cover — a reading of Rose Royce’s 1976 “I’m Going Down” that turns a previously harmless love ballad into an epic, elegant statement of despair.

the best r&b album of the 90s, bar none. (5 stars)
when i first heard this cd, the hurt and pain that i had long buried surfaced, and i felt what mary j. was talking about. that is called empathy. the 7 songs after the keith murray interlude (esp. # 7 & 13) take you on a journey to the depths of a relationship gone bad. when she revealed that she was crying in the vocal booth when she recorded those songs, i immediately understood. she put her heart and soul into those songs, and it defi

Five Stars (5 stars)
The big hit on here, I'm Going Down, is actually my least favorite. Mary didn't have a sophmore slump until Diddy produced her for the second time. Maybe that one is hot in New York but I guess you have to be there to understand. There are a few discs that are like that. This one is a classic and I prefer it to What's the 411? That one has too many hits on it.

One of my favorites cd by Mary (5 stars)
There's so many hits on this CD it's worth every penny I know Mary is making more good music but this is one of her bessssssst.HANDS DOWN

Biography

Born: January 11, 1971 in New York, NY [The Bronx]
Genre: R&B/Soul
Years Active: '90s, '00s, '10s

When her debut album, What's the 411?, hit the street in 1992, critics and fans alike were floored by its powerful combination of modern R&B with an edgy rap sound that glanced off of the pain and grit of Mary J. Blige's Yonkers, New York childhood. Called alternately the new Chaka Khan or new Aretha Franklin, Blige had little in common stylistically with either of those artists, but like them, she helped adorn soul music with new textures and flavors that inspired a whole generation of musicians....
