We Shall Overcome – The Seeger Sessions – Bruce SpringsteenView More By Bruce Springsteen Our ReviewWe Shall Overcome is a loose and loopy jamboree of classic folk songs popularized by Pete Seeger recorded live without rehearsals over three days and nine years. The first batch was made in 1997 for a Seeger tribute album that Springsteen came across while researching tapes for a second planned career retrospective of unreleased recordings, a la 1998's Tracks box. He decided to flesh things out with a full-length album and invited 13 musicians to crowd into his home and capture the fire n' brimstone of a spontaneous hootenanny turned spiritual quest. Springsteen's singing throughout is vibrant and impassioned, whether he's delivering a music book standard such as "Old Dan Tucker" or a charging sing-alonglike "Pay Me My Money Down." Accordion, tuba, banjo, saxophone, trombone, violin, and upright bass create a crackin' ramshackle Salvation Army band unconcerned with stepping on each other's toes. While Springsteen has carefully chosen these songs, he never allows his reverence for the history to prevent him from shouting with pure menace.. Customer ReviewsBRINGING A NEW VOICE TO GREAT OLD SONGS (5 stars)Bruce has taken some of the best songs from yesterday and made them new again. We sang Erie Canal when i was in grade school and it brought back wonderful images and memories. All I can say is Bruce continues to fill my life with his music and insights that I'll never forget. Seeing him at the Greek preforming these songs was like watching a kid in a candy store, he had so much fun singing as we had listening. I can't wait for the upcoming E We Shall Overcome! (5 stars) I'm not a big fan of Brucy here, but this album was pretty good. I'd recomend it for people who like a mellow country/rock. This is probably one of the best albums he's ever made. Key songs if you don't feel like buying the album: O Mary Don't You Weep, Pay Me My Money Down, and Froggie Went a Courtin'. Two thumbs up! A Great Album! (5 stars) Bruce is at his finest, taking classic folk songs and putting a fantastic twist to them! If you listen to any one sing try out his rendition of O Mary Don't You Weep! This is just a great album to sit back and bring back some fond memories of some classic music.
