Butterfly – Mariah CareyView More By Mariah Carey Our ReviewButterfly glides high upon warm erotic breezes while acknowledging the heartaches of real life down below. Most of its tracks are low-lit mood pieces sliding along molten grooves — cuts like the Puff Daddy-produced “Honey” and “Breakdown” allow Mariah to weave her intricate vocal magic upon billowing backdrops. She rises out of her sensual languor to ascend melodic peaks effortlessly, adding just the right degree of sultry desperation to “My All” and “The Roof.” Her innate poise and technical finesse are always evident, making the confessions of self-doubt heard in “Close My Eyes” and “Outside” all the more telling, and “The Beautiful Ones,” a Prince-composed tune, pairs Carey with Dru Hill in a mesmerizing duet. For sheer emotive power though, the prize goes to the elegantly yearning “Whenever You Call.” Those drawn to Mariah for her vocal pyrotechnics and sensuous persona will find Butterfly thoroughly satisfying. Those looking for a little more heat and a little less sweetness than her earlier work contained will be rewarded as well.. Customer ReviewsMariah herself says Butterfly is her personal favorite! (5 stars)Butterfly is an album extremely important to Mariah. It marks her own metamorphosis and is the first album where (for the most part) she could express herself the way that she wanted to. This is definately a more sultry album. Her previous album was a mix of pop with a hint of urban sound. But this album had a different sound. Her lyrics are more provocative in this album and the only uptempo song is Honey. It's more of a mellow CD, but the Mariah's Best! Definitely her peak!! (5 stars) Most of Mariah's fans think Daydream was her magnum opus but I must disagree. If you only buy one album from Mariah's catalogue, this would be the one I recommend. With this album, Mariah blends hip-hop with r&b and almost completely removes pop elements. The strength of this album comes from the wordplay (check out Butterfly, Breakdown) and her vocal technique. Although she uses the whistle register and her trademark of oversinging, she this is awesome (5 stars) even though Mariah has come out with some many more new songs, this album is still fun to listen to BiographyBorn: March 27, 1970 in Huntington, NYGenre: Pop Years Active: '80s, '90s, '00s, '10s The best-selling female performer of the 1990s, Mariah Carey rose to superstardom on the strength of her stunning five-octave voice. An elastic talent who moved easily from glossy ballads to hip-hop-inspired dance-pop, she earned frequent comparison to rivals Whitney Houston and Celine Dion, but did them both one better by composing all of her own material. Born in Long Island, NY, on March 27, 1970, Carey moved to New York City at the age of 17 — just one day after graduating high school —...
