Our Review

Recorded over two nights — October 29 and November 1, 2006 — at New York City’s Beacon Theatre for a live video shoot with Oscar-winning director Martin Scorsese, this 22-track live album captures a fully fortified Rolling Stones running through select highlights from the band’s 45 year career. Back-up singers, an active horn section, and keyboard reinforcements give every song a wide-screen attack that covers all angles. Singer Mick Jagger is in fine shout and uses the occasion to bring out legendary bluesman Buddy Guy for his blues vamp “Champagne and Reefer,” while also making room for the White Stripes’ Jack White to jam out on the Exile on Main Street cut “Loving Cup,” and Christina Aguilera to camp it up for the once-shocking “Live With Me.” The show’s most recent tune, “She Was Hot” from 1983’s Undercover, is turned back into an R&B romp. 1978’s Some Girls is amply represented with the title track, a near punkish “Shattered,” “Just My Imagination,” and “Faraway Eyes.” The band keeps the sound tough, veering towards actual heavy metal for “Satisfaction” and adding a terse chunky edge to “Connection” and “Paint It, Black.” Didn’t they once sing “What a drag it is getting old?” Wouldn’t know it from here.

Start Me Up! (5 stars)
I know what you're thinking....another live one? You bet!! You don't do this job 45 years and not do it well. I've seen them three times...consummate professionals. And they know how to align themselves with guest talent (Christina and Jack..and of course, Buddy). Add to that Scorsese, and you've got an awesome movie and soundtrack. Definitely one of their best live offerings, and you'd be hard pressed to know their ages by the energy

KEITH! (5 stars)
This album has got lots O' Keith. Dear Rolling Stones, Keith - you are like a God. Charlie - you're the best. Mick - you power strut really hilariuously. I would also like to thank you for shutting down The Verve. Barrington Oldschool

I'd Buy It Twice (5 stars)
What a great album! Champagne and Reefer with Buddy Guy is amazing!! The energy of the Stones is unrivaled. Anyone who reduces their comments to ageism is denying themselves the pleasure of enjoying the world's greatest rock n' roll band. They're worth every penny.

By the time the Rolling Stones began calling themselves the World's Greatest Rock & Roll Band in the late '60s, they had already staked out an impressive claim on the title. As the self-consciously dangerous alternative to the bouncy Merseybeat of the Beatles in the British Invasion, the Stones had pioneered the gritty, hard-driving blues-based rock & roll that came to define hard rock. With his preening machismo and latent maliciousness, Mick Jagger became the prototypical rock frontman,...
